The arrest of a man with a stolen credit card in a Cypress department store sparked an investigation that led to three other arrests and recovery of seven stolen vehicles and assorted merchandise, police said Tuesday.

Two Cypress officers arrested Jason Earl Carney, 18, Saturday at the Target Store on Katella Avenue on suspicion of using a stolen credit card, police said.

After making the arrest, Officers Jeff Kepley and Scott Foster went to the Motel 6 in Stanton where Carney had been living in hopes of finding a pickup truck that was reported stolen along with the credit card.

They did not find that pickup, but they found another stolen pickup and two stolen cars, along with several hundred dollars’ worth of stolen merchandise and credit cards at the motel, Lt. John Schaefer said.

The officers also arrested Julie Lynn Scheckles, 18, on suspicion of being an accomplice at the Target Store.

Meanwhile, Schaefer said, officers asked Huntington Beach police to check on a man who called the Cypress jail inquiring about Carney. Officers said they found three more stolen vehicles at the Holiday Inn on Center Drive and arrested Bradley Clark McWilliams, 25, of Westminster and Richard Andrew Castillo, 27, of Midway City.

Schaefer said the stolen pickup originally sought was also recovered, bringing to seven the number of vehicles retrieved.
