LOCAL : Armories Housing Homeless
National Guard armories in Santa Ana and Fullerton will be opened to the homeless again tonight in response to continued chilly weather, Orange County social services officials said.
About 59 people slept Tuesday night at the Santa Ana armory and 22 in Fullerton after the two facilities opened for the first night this winter, said Margaret Beck, manager of adult services and the homeless shelter program for the county’s social services agency.
Each armory has a capacity of 125 people, and Beck said the numbers using the shelters typically increase after the first night as word of the opening spreads.
Under rules laid out by Gov. George Deukmejian, the armories can be opened to the homeless when temperatures are predicted to fall below 40 or if they fall below 50 with a 50% chance of rain.
The Fullerton armory is at 400 S. Brookhurst Road and the Santa Ana armory is at 612 E. Warner Ave.
