Fire Extinguished at Arco Refinery

Share

Arco firefighters used liquid nitrogen to put out a fire that broke out Tuesday evening in a gasoline processing area at the oil company’s Carson refinery, officials said. The blaze was under control less than an hour after it began at 6:23 p.m.

Los Angeles County firefighters went to the scene, but stood by while the Arco fire brigade extinguished the flames, county fire dispatcher Rafael Ortiz said.

The fire began when a flange on a smokestack to a heater broke in that part of the refinery where unleaded gasoline is processed, he said. The heater shut down automatically.

The rest of the refinery, which is the second largest in the county after Chevron’s El Segundo plant, continued to operate normally.
