BREA : Big Trucks Banned on Part of Boulevard

Rules regarding the city’s truck route along Kraemer Boulevard have been revised to placate residents who have complained of air and noise pollution.

Following a city staff recommendation, the City Council voted Tuesday that trucks weighing more than 6,000 pounds be prohibited from a residential section of Kraemer Boulevard and rerouted to Enterprise Street, Voyager Avenue, Surveyor Avenue, NASA Street and the industrial portions of Birch Street.

The plan would provide “the most direct truck route for vehicles servicing the industrial area,” according to City Manager Frank Benest.

The original truck route, on Kraemer Boulevard between Imperial Highway and Birch Street, came under attack by residents concerned about diesel fumes and noise.

The residents, who submitted a petition to the council, also complained that the noise and air pollution lowered their property values.

Businessmen from the area complained that the rerouting would confuse their drivers and increase mileage.
