From Times wire services

William & Mary football Coach Jimmye Laycock has interviewed for the coaching job at Navy, according to a published report today.

Laycock, who coached William & Mary to an 8-3-1 record in 1989, was the second to interview for the post.

Sources told the Baltimore Sun that Laycock met with the athletic board Wednesday. Laycock interviewed for the Navy job the last time it was open, after Gary Tranquill was not offered a new contract after the 1986 season.

Laycock is the second candidate known to have been invited to the academy to meet with board members. Former Detroit Lions Coach Darryl Rogers interviewed last week.

Navy fired Elliot Uzelac last month and has set a Jan. 12 deadline for hiring a new coach.

Other candidates are Virginia assistant Coach Tim O’Brien and Gene Stallings, former Phoenix Cardinals coach.
