Culver City : Council Orders Sprinklers

Share

All buildings and homes built in Culver City after early February must have fire sprinkler systems.

New commercial and industrial buildings, apartments, condominium complexes and single-family dwellings--basically “everything built in the city”--are required to have sprinkler systems under an ordinance adopted by the City Council on Tuesday.

The new ordinance also requires that existing buildings taller than 75 feet be retrofitted with sprinklers. According to Fire Marshal Phillip Garcia, this provision will affect three buildings in the city that were built before a 1974 ordinance requiring high-rises to have sprinklers: the Pacific Hotel, Culver Hotel and Brotman Hospital.

The ordinance takes effect Feb. 2.

Requiring sprinklers in homes is a national trend, Garcia said. In Southern California, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Hawthorne, Burbank, Anaheim and San Clemente are among the cities that have recently enacted sprinkler requirements for residences.
