DANA POINT : Task Force to Lead Anti-Drug Efforts

Share

In a bid to become a “model city” in the war on drugs, city officials plan to recruit residents for a task force on drug and alcohol abuse.

The city plans a public meeting Jan. 25 to outline its anti-drug effort and enlist interested residents for its task force. The city’s campaign against drug and alcohol abuse is endorsed by the county’s Alcohol and Drug Education Prevention Team. County officials are expected to attend the city’s Jan. 25 session.

The city task force will focus on such problems as teen-age drinking and drug abuse and issue periodic reports to the City Council, Assistant City Manager John Donlevy said.

In addition to Dana Point residents, task force members will include representatives from area school and recreation districts, as well as local business and homeowners associations.

County officials say they will play a support role for the city.

“We basically point out what tools exist in the toolbox for cities to use” to fight drug and alcohol abuse, said Dan Hicks, a staff member for the county alcohol- and drug-prevention team.

The county team, known as ADEPT, works with Orange County cities to develop strategies to identify community problems, generate public support and recommend solutions, Hicks said.

The ADEPT program is under way in Irvine, where more than 100 citizens recently attended a public forum on drug and alcohol issues.
