LOCAL : Lawyer Accused of Providing Pot to Client at Men’s County Jail
A criminal defense lawyer was arrested at the Los Angeles Men’s County Jail for giving his client cigarettes stuffed with marijuana, authorities said today.
Paul E. Potter, 42, of South Pasadena was released on $15,000 bail after his arrest Thursday afternoon in a room at the downtown jail set aside for lawyers to meet with clients. An arraignment date was set for Jan. 26.
After a deputy denied Potter permission to give his client a pack of cigarettes, the lawyer tried to slip the inmate a pack of brand-name cigarettes that had been repacked with marijuana and plugged at the tip with tobacco, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
Potter’s client, Steve Young, 30, had been charged in connection with five robberies and is being held on $1-million bail. He faces additional charges of possession of drugs in a jail facility.
