SOCCER ROUNDUP : Penalty Kick Ignites Newbury Park

Share

Senior forward Dave Feldman’s goal with five minutes to play Thursday capped a three-goal rally in the second half and lifted Newbury Park High to a 3-2 victory over Thousand Oaks in a Marmonte League match at Newbury Park.

“It didn’t look too good for the boys,” Newbury Park Coach Ken Buttner said.

That’s because the Panthers (9-4-1, 1-0-1 in league play) trailed, 2-0, with 24 minutes to play. But Chris Joyce scored on a penalty kick to trigger a Newbury Park rally.

Six minutes later, junior forward Kaare Simonsen, an exchange student from Denmark, tied the score with a goal on an assist from Feldman. Finally, Feldman, with an assist from Joyce, scored his team-high 13th goal for the game-winner.

After a scoreless first half, Thousand Oaks (4-6-1, 1-0-1) grabbed the lead when junior Pat Dujan headed in a pass from Darren Leader. Chris Bowen added a breakaway goal to give the Lancers a seemingly insurmountable lead.

But Joyce’s goal on the penalty kick, Buttner said, ignited the Panthers.

“That really inspired the team, gave them the impetus to start putting a lot of pressure on Thousand Oaks,” he said.

Newbury Park junior goalkeeper John Casarietti stopped nine of 11 shots.
