SOCCER ROUNDUP : Granada Hills Makes Single Goal Stand Up

Share
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Kennedy High squandered numerous scoring opportunities and fell from the ranks of the unbeaten Wednesday--dropping a 1-0 decision to visiting Granada Hills in a boys’ Mid-Valley League opener.

Both teams played with feverish intensity and the aggression came to a head in a shoving match during the postmatch handshake.

No one was hurt but a Kennedy scorekeeper struck a Granada Hills player. Also, Kennedy’s Ruben Rios was given a red card for his involvement in the scuffle and must sit out the next game.

Granada Hills struck early in the first half, scoring when Kelly Brockway connected from 25 yards. The play involved an element of luck and was typical of what would frustrate Kennedy all afternoon.

The Golden Cougars (8-1-1 overall, 4-1 in league play) had defended a Granada Hills fast break down the sideline nearly flawlessly, but, when the ball was headed away from the goal by a Kennedy defender, it flew directly to Brockway. His shot sailed over the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Salvador Reyes.

Granada Hills (8-4, 5-0) then survived an onslaught of shots. The Highlanders were outshot, 18-3, in the first half and 22-11 overall.

Granada Hills goalie Erick Miseroy notched 10 saves for his fifth consecutive shutout.
