Supervisors Install Schaefer in Top Post
Ventura County Supervisor Madge L. Schaefer took over as chairwoman of the Board of Supervisors in a brief ceremony this week at the county government center in Ventura.
As the newly installed presiding officer of the county’s governing board, Schaefer pledged to work for more representation for Ventura County in Sacramento.
“My top priority will be a higher profile in the state legislative lobby,” Schaefer said shortly after she moved into the center seat on the dais Tuesday morning.
A more visible delegation in Sacramento will increase the county’s chances for improved funding for mental health, court funding and other programs that depend on state funds, Schaefer said.
Schaefer, who represents District 2, which includes Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park, replaced Supervisor Susan K. Lacey in the largely ceremonial position.
Schaefer, 47, was elected to the board in 1986, defeating incumbent Ed Jones. Her career in public office began with her election to the Thousand Oaks City Council in 1978. She was reelected in 1982.
