U.S. Airlines Post Records in ‘89: U.S. scheduled airlines reported record levels of passenger miles, air cargo and employment in 1989, the Air Transport Assn. said. But the total number of passengers carried and profits for the year through September were down, the trade group reported in a year-end review. It said passenger miles rose by 2%, to 430 billion miles, cargo freight was up 7% during the first 11 months of 1989 to 9.2 billion tons, and employment rose by about 2%, to 490,000. The ATA said the airlines carried about 453 million passengers, down slightly from 1988’s 455 million.
