Taiwan’s trade with Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union grew to more than $500 million during the first 11 months of 1989, up 31% over the 1988 period, according to the Board of Foreign Trade.
Indirect trade with the Soviet Union, Taiwan’s largest trading partner in the Eastern Bloc, ballooned by 431% to hit $128 million, compared to $24.06 million in 1988.
Taiwan exported $149.19 million in goods to the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc between January and November, up 86% over 1988. It imported $350.96 million in goods, up 16% from 1988.
The Economics Ministry has proposed opening direct trade with Moscow, and the government is expected to approve the measure.
