From Times Staff and Wire Reports

San Francisco residents, big supporters of Sen. Alan Cranston in the past, overwhelmingly feel he should finish out his term but not seek reelection, according to a poll released Sunday. A San Francisco Examiner poll said residents surveyed felt 2 to 1 that they would not vote for the California Democrat again and by nearly 4 to 1 that his behavior in the Lincoln Savings & Loan scandal was improper. “This is a very serious signal that Alan Cranston would be in big trouble if he had to run for reelection now,” said Bruce Cain, associate director of the Institute of Governmental Studies at UC Berkeley. San Francisco residents voted overwhelmingly for Cranston in all four of his U.S. Senate campaigns. The telephone poll of 401 people was conducted from Dec. 26 to Dec. 30 by Richard Herz Consulting of Bodega Bay. It had a margin of error of 5%.
