Run Turn Wins Tropical Park Derby as Calder Meeting Closes

Run Turn scored a 4 1/4-length victory Sunday in the $100,000 Tropical Park Derby at Calder Race Course as the track’s 49-day meeting came to a close.

Country Day came from last to edge Shot Gun Scott for second and Fiery Best finished fourth.

Run Turn, ridden by Earlie Fires, ran 1 1/8 mile in 1:52 2-5 and paid $34.20, $13.20 and $5.60. Country Day paid $10 and $5. Shot Gun Scott paid $3 to show.

Last year, Run Turn won three of 12 starts and $57,324. The Florida-bred son of Charming Turn earned $60,000 for his victory in the Tropical Park Derby.

The Florida winter season resumes Tuesday with Gulfstream opening a 90-day meeting.

At Aqueduct Park in New York, the Phil Johnson-trained entry of Coby Escapade and Skate’s Honor finished 1-2 in the $85,500 Montauk Stakes for 3-year-olds and up Sunday.

Cobe Escapade, carrying 117 pounds and ridden by Mike Smith, finished two lengths ahead of Skate’s Honor, 123, ridden by Jose Santos. Both are owned by John Franks.

Fifteen Gold Stars, the odds-on choice, was fourth in the field of six.

Coby Escapade covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:47 1-5 to earn $51,300 with his second win in nine career starts.
