Third-ranked Oklahoma did not score quickly. In fact, the Sooners hardly scored at all.

Kansas State held the Sooners 71 points below their average Tuesday night and sent them to their first loss of the season, 66-51, at Manhattan, Kan.

Oklahoma (12-1) began the game leading the nation in scoring at 122 points per game. Its average margin of victory, 38 1/2 points, was the widest in the country.

“We broke down in every phase of the game, and when you don’t shoot well, bad things will happen,” Sooner Coach Billy Tubbs said.

Kansas State (10-7) kept Oklahoma to its lowest total since it scored 49 points in a 1983 NCAA tournament loss to Indiana. The defeat left No. 1 Kansas and No. 2 Georgetown the only unbeaten Division I teams.

Oklahoma shot 29% from the field (15 for 51), and its five starters combined to shoot four for 25. The Sooners also hurt themselves by going 16 for 28 from the free throw line. Kansas State hit 21 of 44 shots from the field (48%) and made 22 of 36 free throws.

“We were giving them some problems (with our defense), but we couldn’t get anything going offensively,” Tubbs said. “Let’s face it, when you can’t get anything going offensively, you’re not going to win.”

Last February, Oklahoma set a record for a Kansas State opponent by scoring 112 points against the Wildcats. But this time, the Sooners got only 25 points in the first half and didn’t do much better in the final 20 minutes.

Oklahoma was five for 19 (26%) on its three-point shots against the smaller Wildcats.

Jean Derouillere led Kansas State with 23 points. Smokey McCovery led Oklahoma with 13 points and Jackie Jones had 11.

No. 4 Missouri 72, Oklahoma State 71--Anthony Peeler’s free throw with nine seconds left gave the Tigers a Big Eight victory at Stillwater, Okla.

Peeler, who had 19 points, made the second of two free throws to give Missouri the lead. Oklahoma State got the ball downcourt quickly, but John Potter’s jump shot from the left wing skipped across the rim, and Lee Coward grabbed the rebound for the Tigers as time expired.

Doug Smith had 23 points for Missouri (16-1, 3-0), which held on after letting a 13-point second-half lead slip away. Byron Houston had tied the score for Oklahoma State (8-5, 0-3) with two free throws with 24 seconds left.

No. 11 Georgia Tech 59, Temple 57--Yellow Jacket freshman Kenny Anderson made two free throws with 2:11 remaining for the game’s final points at Atlanta.

The Owls missed three shots down the stretch, including a three-pointer by Mik Kilgore with four seconds remaining and another by Mark Macon at the buzzer.

Scott led Georgia Tech (12-1) with 20 points and Anderson added 15, including eight in the final 7:07. Macon scored 22 for Temple (6-7).

No. 13 LSU 101, Vanderbilt 72--Maurice Williamson sparked an 11-0 run midway through the second half that led the Tigers in the Southeastern Conference game at Baton Rouge, La.

LSU (11-2, 4-1) got 22 points each from Williamson and Chris Jackson. Vanderbilt (10-4, 3-2) got 23 points from Todd Millholland.

Stanley Roberts had 21 points and 14 rebounds for the Tigers.

No. 15 St. John’s 64, Villanova 58--Jayson Williams scored 13 points and Jason Buchanan made two crucial free throws with 48 seconds remaining to help the Redmen in a Big East game at Philadelphia.

St. John’s (15-3, 4-1) led by 15 points with 12:32 remaining in the game and by eight with 5:08 to go. The Wildcats (10-8, 3-3) closed the gap to 59-58 with 1:27 remaining. Chris Walker scored all of Villanova’s points, including a three-pointer, during a 10-3 run.

But Buchanan then made two free throws, Williams followed with a third and Malik Sealy made a layup to complete the scoring.

Creighton 99, Iowa State 94--Bob Harstad scored 31 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and the Bluejays hit three clutch three-pointers to get a victory in double overtime at Ames, Iowa.

Iowa State (5-8) got a career-high 37 points and 17 rebounds from Victor Alexander. The Cyclones led, 80-77, on Terry Woods’ layup with 57 seconds left in regulation, but Creighton’s (11-6) Duan Cole hit a three-pointer with 39 seconds left that sent the game into overtime.

Darin Plautz hit a three-point jump shot from the right baseline that tied the score with 53 seconds left and forced a second overtime.

Alabama-Birmingham 86, Western Kentucky 55--Andy Kennedy scored 22 points for the Blazers, who took sole possession of first place in the Sun Belt Conference at Birmingham, Ala.

Both teams came into the game with 3-0 conference records, but Alabama-Birmingham (12-4) took control with a 20-2 run in the first half and led by as many as 34 points over the Hilltoppers (6-10).

Notre Dame 74, Rutgers 69--Joe Fredrick scored seven of his 18 second-half points in a 13-2 run, and the cold-shooting Irish (8-5) put things together long enough to win in East Rutherford, N. J.
