A robbery victim in National City chased his alleged attacker in a car pursuit that ended when the suspect hit a third car and critically injured its driver.

The chase started Tuesday night at a Bank of America automatic teller machine at 300 E. 8th St. when the robber put a sharp object to the victim’s back, took $140 from him, leaped into a car and drove off, National City Police Sgt. Gene Ciolli said.

The robbery victim, whose name was not divulged, jumped into his car and chased the suspect for 2 miles, into San Diego, where their cars collided, Ciolli said. The suspect’s car also hit the car in front of him, injuring the driver.

Despite a broken pelvis suffered in the crash, the suspect, Nolan James Fulcher, 30, ran when San Diego police arrived and the robbery victim told police what had happened, Ciolli said.

Ciolli said Fulcher climbed over a chain-link Navy base fence, but a San Diego police officer grabbed Fulcher through an opening in the fence. Military police answered the officer’s call for help and caught Fulcher, Ciolli said.

Fulcher was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center. He was under guard at the hospital and was booked on suspicion of robbery and felony hit and run, Ciolli said.

Fulcher lives on South 47th Street in San Diego, said Bill Robinson, San Diego Police spokesman.

A woman in Fulcher’s car was taken by ambulance to Physicians & Surgeons Hospital in East San Diego, but she refused treatment, Ciolli said. Police are looking for her.

The man in the third car, Herberto Acosta, 19, of Chula Vista was taken to Mercy Hospital, where a spokeswoman said he was in critical but stable condition Wednesday.
