Hearing Is a Chance to Express Views on Oxnard Growth

Share

Public hearings are scheduled with the Oxnard Planning Commission on Jan. 25 for the revised general plan. This is the chance for concerned citizens to express their feelings in regard to Oxnard’s future.

The revised general plan also contains a community attitude survey which showed: (1) The majority indicated that residential, commercial, and industrial growth are too fast; (2) The majority indicated they did not see the city moving in the direction of their goals for the community; (3) Many residents expressed the desire to retain the semi-rural character of the community and to preserve natural scenic resources.

The plan as it currently stands does not set any specific growth limitations for the city. To quote from the growth management section of the revised plan: “The city will apply specific policy considerations to development approvals review rather than merely attempt to respond to growth trends . . . the City has also chosen to adopt a performance-based approach rather than set arbitrary and unrealistic limits on future growth (such as annual housing limits).”

If you would like to see growth limited, please attend the hearings or send your view in writing to the Planning Commission. It is time we have a general plan based on specific future growth limits.

These limits do not have to be unrealistic or arbitrary. They can be based on specific limits set by public hearing, based on the views of the concerned citizens of Oxnard and on the environmental consequences.
