NATION IN BRIEF : ARIZONA : Gov. Mofford Opts Out of Fall Election
Arizona Gov. Rose Mofford announced that she will not be a candidate this fall to extend her time in the office she acquired through the impeachment of former Gov. Evan Mecham. The 67-year-old Democrat made the announcement in Phoenix on her first day back at work following surgery Dec. 18 to remove her gallbladder. She said health was not a factor in the decision. Mecham and other Republicans have announced their intention to run for governor, but Democrats had steered clear of the contest, deferring to Mofford.
