NHL ROUNDUP : Flyers Still Winless in ’90 After 3-2 Loss to Canucks

First place in the Patrick Division is becoming a jinx. The Washington Capitals took over the top spot in December, then went into such a slump their coach was fired.

The Philadelphia Flyers took over on New Year’s Eve.

They haven’t won since.

Bob Quinn scored at 3:29 of overtime Thursday night at Philadelphia to give the Vancouver Canucks a 3-2 victory.

The Flyers’ record in 1990 is 0-6-3.

Philadelphia and the Capitals are fighting for last place. Will New Jersey and the New York Islanders, Patrick co-leaders, be next to hit the skids?

Quinn’s goal ended the Canucks’ five-game losing streak.

Pittsburgh 3, New York Rangers 3--Mario Lemieux has expressed some dissatisfaction with his scoring streak because some of the points have been meaningless.

He stretched his point streak to 35 games in a game at Pittsburgh with two meaningful goals. The second, with 2:57 left in regulation, was his 35th and gave the Penguins the tie.

Boston 2, Calgary 2--Many think that Calgary and Boston will meet in the final round of Stanley Cup competition.

If this game at Boston is an indication, they will be well-matched. Craig Janney’s goal 40 seconds into the last period pulled the Bruins even.

Toronto 4, St. Louis 1--With backup goaltender Jeff Reese stopping 48 shots at St. Louis, the Maple Leafs beat the Blues for the sixth consecutive time this season.

Reese came into the game with a 6.29 goals-against average, but frustrated St. Louis at every turn.

Minnesota 7, Quebec 4--In the first 48 games this season, left wing Dave Mackey had only two goals.

At Bloomington, Minn., he doubled his output to lead the North Stars to victory.

Mike Modano also scored twice for Minnesota.
