Tustin High Leads U.S. in West Point Students

Tustin High School seniors Erin Cunningham, Jennifer MacLean and Daniel Taylor have received appointments to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

The three appointments to the academy brings the total to nine in the past six years, more than any other high school in the country, according to the academy’s director of admissions.

Brent Borden, David Lauderdale and Fred Rice were accepted in 1984; Laurie Reider in 1987, and Matt Blitch and Tom Feuerborn in 1988.

“I’m really proud of the accomplishments of the students and staff at Tustin High,” said Merlin L. (Bud) Henry Jr., a Tustin Union High School District board member and an admissions representative for the academy.

Laguna Beach Boy Scouts Ryan B. Goldsmith, 14, and Jason V. Young, 15, both of Troop 38, received their Eagle rank at a court of honor at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Laguna Niguel Stake.

Goldsmith collected 400 pounds of food and Young conducted a fire prevention awareness program for their service projects. Both are freshmen at Dana Hills High School in Dana Point.

Mary Cook, a Santa Ana resident and 15-year employee of Newport Beach-based The Hammond Co., a mortgage banking firm, was named winner of the company’s Chairman Award for service innovation and leadership. She is the company’s shipping and funding manager.

Conservationist Charlotte M. Clarke, a veteran Fullerton College biology instructor, has been named winner of the Conservation Medal from the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The award recognizes the Fountain Valley woman’s conservation record as both a teacher and activist. Besides her role as a biology instructor, she teaches wilderness survival skills and leads conditioning hikes and nature walks.

Steven Nemetz, 29, of El Toro, was named Employee of the Year by Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., based in Irvine. He was selected from 918 employees. Nemetz studied computer sciences at UC Irvine.

Newport Beach resident Jann Church, president and founder of Jann Church Advertising and Graphic Design. Inc. in Newport Beach, was presented the Dama de Distincion (Woman of Distinction) award at the Mexican American Foundation’s California Forum in San Diego.

Church is a graduate of the USC School of Architecture and Fine Arts and is a former instructor in the UC Irvine design program, where she remains on the advisory council.

The foundation was formed in 1971 to promote trans-border relations on economic, civic and cultural levels, as well as to increase mutual awareness and understanding with Mexico and other Latin American countries.

Sophomore Ingrid Scherschel and junior Becca Schneider, both students at Foothill High School in Tustin, had their artwork selected for Irvine Valley College’s 1990 High School Art Calendar. Their work was selected from 150 entries.

Paul Hoffman, equipment manager and a grounds custodial worker at Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton, has been named Orange County Special Olympics Athlete of the Year.
