The tango did not originate “among the pimps and prostitutes of Buenos Aires” but rather among the male customers. The tango was danced by males, with other males as partners, while waiting in the brothels.
Argentine friends shared this information with me when I visited in 1985. They were amused by North Americans romanticizing the dance as a result of the stage show “Tango Argentino.”
