Sobering Influences

Add another irony to life in one of the world’s most gorgeous cities (my favorite is that, despite our beaches, parks, and sports, we’ve got a lot of folks who can’t enjoy them without being cranked up on methamphetamine.)

Now we’ve got our elected officials pledging to “balance the rights” of those who need a buzz to enjoy a sunset.

The noise, trash, crime and drunk driving which public drinking creates are only its most obvious consequences.

What about its long-term effect on our kids? Children learn from what we do, not from what we say. The message we’re sending our kids is that you can’t enjoy a boat race, Symphony Pops concert, or walk on the beach unless you’re drinking.

All the DARE programs and Charter Hospital treatments in the world cannot undo the fact that our children are always watching, ready to replicate both our responsible and irresponsible acts.

Enacting a booze ban means taking responsibility, as adults are supposed to do. Apparently this is too complex a concept for Mayor Maureen O’Connor and company, who take their cues from such upright citizens as Old Mission Beach Athletic Club members.

I’m convinced the majority of San Diegans do want to take responsibility. Let your voices be heard!
