Narcotics investigators in suburban Sacramento arrested five people and seized what they described as the first home laboratory in the continental United States for the manufacture of smokable methamphetamine, more commonly known as “ice.” Acting on a tip from detectives in Colorado Springs, Colo., Sacramento authorities on Friday raided a house in nearby Elk Grove, where they found four pounds of “ice” in various stages of production, along with chemicals to manufacture 32 pounds of the illegal narcotic. In Hawaii, where use of the drug is widespread, “ice” sells on the street for about $50,000 a pound, according to detectives.
