Channels 2, 4 Share Golden Mikes Limelight : Broadcasting: In the radio category, 11 of the annual awards honoring local news programs went to KNX-AM.

KNBC Channel 4 and KCBS Channel 2 split top television honors at the 40th annual Golden Mike Awards presented Friday for excellence in locally produced broadcast news. KNBC’s news team won six honors including best 30-minute newscast, while KCBS captured five including best 60-minute newscast.

KNX-AM (1070) again swept the radio portion of the ceremony, capturing 11 awards including best radio newscast. No other radio station received more than 3 awards.

For the second straight year KNBC was honored for its 11 p.m. newscast. The station also earned awards for Fred Roggin’s sports segment, its documentary on education and for special coverage of the San Francisco earthquake. KCBS’ 5 p.m. newscast won for the third consecutive year. Channel 2 was also congratulated for its investigation into allegations of police brutality and racism in Long Beach and for Judd McIlvain’s “troubleshooter” segment.

KABC Channel 7, which was shut out of the Golden Mikes last year, garnered three awards Friday for best newscast writing, best news series reporting for its multi-parter called “Medical Gridlock” and for Bill Press’ news commentary.

KCET Channel 28 and KCOP Channel 13 also won three statuettes. KCET’s documentary “Taking Back the Streets” was honored as was KCOP’s investigative report on “Cudahy.” KTLA Channel 5, the top-rated independent news, won two awards, while Fox-owned KTTV Channel 11 and Disney-owned KCAL Channel 9 were shut out.

The late Bill Stout, veteran reporter and commentator for Channel 2, was honored with a Memorial Resolution acknowledging his enormous contributions to local television journalism.

Local radio stations KCSN-FM, KFI-AM and KHAY-FM in Ventura were all also commended for excellence in their daily newscasts.

The Golden Mikes are presented annually by the Radio and Television News Assn. of Southern California. Some awards are presented in several divisions to accommodate the large discrepancy in the size of various station’s full-time news staffs.
