CORONA DEL MAR : School Will Reopen in Crowded District

Because of overcrowding in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District, a Corona del Mar school closed six years ago will be reopened next fall.

Lincoln School, a junior high that closed when Corona del Mar High School added grades seven and eight to its student body, will become an elementary school, said district Supt. John Nicoll.

The district will begin making $3 million to $4 million worth of improvements to Lincoln School in June. The school is currently being leased to Coastline Community College.

The school board will decide by March which grade levels will be included in Lincoln School after meeting with parents and architects. “We will work with the community in whatever we do,” said Board President Judith Franco.

So far, overcrowding has been a problem limited to the elementary school level, Nicoll said. Corona del Mar High School is at just 60% of capacity and should be able to handle the new growth, he added.

After the Lincoln School improvements are under way, the school board will discuss overcrowding in the Estancia, Harbor and Costa Mesa zones of the district, Franco said.

“The projected enrollment for the next three to five years shows the need for a new school every year,” Franco said.

The district has about 16,000 students, but enrollment is projected to increase to 21,000 by 1994.
