Irvine Schedules Vote on Overpasses
Several dozen residents applauded Tuesday as the City Council voted to let the public decide on a proposal to widen two pedestrian overpasses to accommodate cars over Yale Avenue.
Most of the council has opposed the proposal, but residents supporting the widening gathered more than 7,000 signatures in December, more than enough to force a citywide referendum.
Council members Tuesday were urged by leaders of the Yale Action Committee to approve the overpass proposal without an election. The council, however, approved a motion by Councilwoman Sally Anne Sheridan to schedule a June 10 election day and “decide this issue for once and for all.”
