Coyer Leaves UCLA for Houston

The overhaul of UCLA’s football coaching staff continued Tuesday when Larry Coyer, who coached the Bruin defensive backs last season, was named defensive coordinator at Houston.

Coyer, a Bruin assistant for three seasons, is the fourth coach to leave Westwood since the end of UCLA’s 3-7-1 season.

Larry Kerr, Mike Waufle and Dave Currey were fired last month by Coach Terry Donahue. In addition, former offensive coordinator Greg Robinson was named assistant head coach and assigned the task of aiding defensive coordinator Bob Field in rebuilding the defense.

Homer Smith was hired this month for the third time to serve as offensive coordinator, and quarterback coach Jacob Burney was hired to replace Waufle as coach of the defensive line. Rick Neuheisel, who coached the quarterbacks for two seasons, was reassigned to the wide receivers.

Two staff openings remain.
