Compton : Council Votes 4-1 for Pact on Mack Truck Franchise

A final agreement guaranteeing Compton $250,000 this year in sales tax revenue from a Mack truck franchise was passed Tuesday by a 4-1 vote of the City Council.

Councilwoman Patricia A. Moore voted against the contract to sell land in the Auto Plaza to Universal Mack Truck Sales and Services Inc., which will move its Los Angeles and Signal Hill operations to Compton. Moore wanted a comprehensive development plan for the 24-acre plaza.

Mack is buying 6.9 acres at Greenleaf Boulevard and Alameda Street for $2.8 million with a down payment of $1 million. The firm has guaranteed the city sales tax revenue on an escalating scale that is to reach $500,000 by 1994. If revenue does not meet expectations, Mack must make up the shortfall to the city in cash. Mack representatives said that they can build their facility in six months.

A nonprofit community group that wants to build low-cost townhouses in the plaza offered $9.5 million for all 24 acres Tuesday, but the council has said it wants commercial development there. The group, South Central Organizing Committee, said it will continue its fight to build housing on the remaining acreage.
