NHL ROUNDUP : Turgeon’s Goals Power Sabres, 3-2

Pierre Turgeon scored his second goal of the game on a power play midway through the third period, lifting the Buffalo Sabres to a 3-2 victory over the Blackhawks Wednesday night at Chicago.

The victory, Buffalo’s fourth in its last five games, moved the Sabres within one point of first-place Boston in the Adams Division. The loss cut Chicago’s lead in the Norris Division to five points over Toronto, which routed Minnesota, 7-3.

Turgeon scored the game-winner after taking a pass from Dave Andreychuk and lifting the puck over goaltender Jacques Cloutier at 8:21.

Turgeon had tied the score, 2-2, with 2:41 remaining in the second period, scoring from just outside the crease.

Toronto 7, Minnesota 3--Tom Kurvers scored two power-play goals at Toronto as the Maple Leafs improved their record to 8-1-1 in the last 10 games.

Mark Osborne, Lou Franceschetti, Luke Richardson, Gary Leeman and Tom Fergus also scored for the Maple Leafs. Dave Gagner, Brian Bellows and Frantisek Musil scored for Minnesota, which is 0-8-1 in its last nine road games.

Minnesota outshot Toronto, 36-22, but the Maple Leafs scored on two of their three power-play chances. Minnesota failed to score in four power play opportunities and gave up a shorthanded goal to Franceschetti.

Montreal 7, Quebec 3--Russ Courtnall scored two goals and his linemates, Guy Carbonneau and Ryan Walter, added one apiece at Montreal.

The Nordiques, beaten, 9-2, by Boston on Tuesday, were outshot 38-18 in losing for the 11th time in their last 14 games.

New Jersey 3, Washington 2--John MacLean scored a power-play goal with three seconds to play as the Devils defeated the Capitals at East Rutherford, N.J., and took over sole possession of first place in the Patrick Division.

It was the second consecutive night the Capitals gave up the winning goal with three seconds to play. Winnipeg handed new Washington Coach Terry Murray his first loss in three games on Tuesday night by defeating the Capitals, 4-3, on a late goal by Greg Paslawski.

The Devils are two points ahead of the New York Islanders.
