In a report recently released by the environmental group Natural Resources Defense Council, 56 county firms were listed among the top 3,014 companies in the nation using three chemicals known to deplete the Earth’s ozone layer. The companies were ranked on a weighted basis according to how much of each of the three chemicals--methyl chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and a chlorofluorocarbon known as CFC-113--they use. The report was based on federal government figures derived from the companies’ own reports under the federal “right to know” law. Companies were required to begin reporting the information in 1987, and, in most instances, those are the most recent numbers available. Below is a list of how all the county companies ranked and the thousands of pounds of the chemicals in question for the years 1987 and, in some cases, 1988. The higher the ranking, the more dangerous the company’s emissions, according to NRDC. There are no numbers available for carbon tetrachloride for either year.
