Building Owners Fined in Waste Water Dumping

Share

A partnership that owns a jewelry district building was convicted Thursday of dumping heavy metals into the city sewer system and fined $25,000.

Los Angeles Municipal Court Commissioner Joseph Spada also placed the partnership, West Sixth and Broadway, and one of the general partners, Diran Akpulat, on three years’ informal probation.

The commissioner scheduled a March 12 hearing to determine how much restitution the defendants will pay the city Department of Public Works to cover its investigative costs.

The sentence was imposed after Akpulat pleaded no contest to 10 violations of a Municipal Code section that makes it a crime to discharge into city sewers waste water that exceeds allowable limits of hazardous materials. The partnership pleaded no contest to one violation of a health and safety code section that prohibits the illegal disposal of hazardous wastes. All charges are misdemeanors.

The building is located at 314 W. 6th St.
