HUNTINGTON BEACH : Parking Garage Near Beach OKd

Share

The City Council has voted to accept a staff recommendation for a 767-car parking garage on the beach side of Pacific Coast Highway just north of the pier.

The cost of the project is expected to be $8.7 million.

Two other proposals considered by the city were for a 709-car structure costing $9.2 million and a 675-car facility costing $9.4 million.

City Administrator Paul E. Cook said the city staff recommended the 767-car structure not only because it provides space for more cars at a cheaper construction cost but “primarily because of ease of parking.”

Cook added “about 78% of the people who’ll be using this do not live in the city, and we want to make it easy for them to be able to park.”

The proposed parking garage would be on the beach between Main and 7th streets. Cook said it probably would not be built until after construction has started on the city’s new pier.

The new pier, to replace the storm-battered existing one that has been closed since July, 1988, is scheduled to be rebuilt starting this summer and to open by September, 1991.
