LA HABRA : School Face Lift Hinges on Funding

Share

Board members of the La Habra City School District have decided Walnut Elementary School is due for an $827,000 face lift this summer, but are concerned about funding.

Supt. Rich Hermann told the board that word about funds should be available from the state Office of Local Assistance by mid-February. The district is seeking a share of funds allocated for school improvements. Without state assistance, Hermann said the improvements will have to wait.

Some board members questioned whether work on the 35-year-old school can be completed before pupils return in September. Architect George Knowles of Tustin said it is possible the deadline would not be met.

Knowles outlined a work schedule in an attempt to avoid disrupting classes during the final weeks of the current school year, and which will complete the bulk of the work during a 77-day period ending a few days before the fall semester begins.

Board President Antonio Valle Jr. urged Hermann to tell teachers and parents about the construction schedule to avoid problems.

“There’s going to be inconveniences but in the end, it’s going to be fine,” Valle said.

Among the improvements planned are modifications to doors and restrooms to allow access by the handicapped, new roofing for one building, and covered walkways, new carpeting, improved lighting, and an $80,000 shaded lunch area.

Plans also call for a new fire alarm system.
