Left-Hander Perry, Recovering From Surgery, Signed by Dodgers

The Dodgers signed another injured pitcher Friday, free-agent left-hander Pat Perry.

Perry, who was a relief pitcher for the Chicago Cubs, signed a one-year, non-guaranteed contract. He did not appear in a major league game after June 17 because of a sore shoulder and underwent arthroscopic rotator-cuff surgery in November.

The Dodgers had previously signed Jim Gott, a right-handed reliever who saved 34 games for Pittsburgh in 1988 but was sidelined for all of last season while recuperating from elbow surgery to repair a torn ligament.

Perry, who had an 0-1 record with a 1.77 earned-run average in 35 2/3 innings for the Cubs, might not be ready until after the start of the season. If he makes the team, he will receive $150,000 base salary, with the chance to make $175,000 in incentives based on appearances.

“Pat pitched very well for the Cubs last year prior to his injury, and our reports indicate that he is on his way to a full recovery,” said Fred Claire, Dodger vice president. Perry, who will be 31 by opening day, said his shoulder feels good, although he has yet to try anything more strenuous than playing catch.

In parts of five major league seasons with three teams, Perry is 12-10 with a 3.34 ERA.
