UCLA Guest House Needed for Families

Share

The Jan. 18 Westside section carried an article on its front page proclaiming “Homeowner Groups Attack UCLA’s ‘Guest House’ Plan.” As a homeowner in this area, I must disagree with Laura Lake’s interpretation of designating this facility a hotel. This is an urgently needed family guest house for patients at the medical center. It will provide housing to families who need to be near relatives at the hospital.

There is only one affordable hotel in Westwood Village. Its vacancy rate is low and it cannot accommodate all the families who come from outside the area to avail themselves of the unique medical services that UCLA provides.

Those of us who have had family members in the hospital will understand how vital it is for a large hospital to not only treat the patient but consider the family, too. This guest house will be within walking distance of the medical center and will enable family members to be close to their loved ones.

As president of a support group that provides funds for housing, transportation, meals and special equipment for patients, I know how great the need is for those families who have great difficulty coping with medical disasters.
