School Board to Seek Funds to Buy Ambassador

Share

The Los Angeles school board has voted to increase its request for state construction funds--from $105 to $120 million--to buy the Ambassador Hotel, tear it down and build a high school for 2,300 students on the 24-acre Mid-Wilshire site.

The state is out of school construction money now, but more funds may be available if voters approve a bond issue expected to go on the June ballot.

The school district is vying for the site with developer Donald Trump, who wants to replace the hotel with the nation’s tallest skyscraper, and preservationists, who want it to remain as an important landmark. The district could acquire the site by eminent domain, but only if it has the money for the purchase.
