Theater May Not be Reconstructed: Shakespeare’s original Globe Theatre, in Southwark, South London, may never see the light of day after an archeologists’ report questioning the feasibility of excavation. Although Globe Theatre Trust officials have signed an $18-million contract to reconstruct the Globe nearby and are pressing for an early start to excavation of the original theater, the unpublished report, produced for the Department of the Environment, says the Globe’s foundations are so unstable and fragile that the remains could be destroyed during excavation. The Department of the Environment and the Hanson Trust, which owns the site, have agreed to abide by the findings.
