Dulles Airport

Share

I was dismayed to learn that Sen. Robert Dole (R-Kan.) has proposed changing the name of Washington’s Dulles International Airport. This is particularly ironic in that President Eisenhower, whom the senator wishes to honor in the renaming, was most determined in his belief that the new airport should be named for his close friend and secretary of state, as a tribute to his service to the nation. President Eisenhower decreed that the airport should be named for Secretary Dulles, who flew more than half a million miles and was recognized (before the jet era) as the most traveled secretary of state in our history.

It is most appropriate that we honor President Eisenhower, on this the centennial of his birth. However, it would certainly not be in keeping with his desires that the tribute which he accorded my grandfather be taken away in this manner.
