Publisher Pleads Not Guilty in Dog Shooting
Darrow (Duke) Tully, the editor and publisher of the Ojai Valley News who is accused of shooting a neighbor’s dog in the head, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of animal cruelty.
The plea was entered at Tully’s arraignment on the misdemeanor charge, which carries a maximum penalty of a year in jail and a $20,000 fine.
The Ventura County district attorney’s office has accused Tully of shooting a dog named Baby, owned by Mary Bishop of Ojai on Oct. 24 after the 10-year-old cockapoo mix wandered into Tully’s yard.
Baby recovered from the wound, which prosecutors say was caused either by a BB or pellet gun.
Tully’s jury trial is scheduled for early March.
