COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Georgia Tech Hands North Carolina Worst Loss Since ’69
Dennis Scott scored 37 points and Brian Oliver added a career-high 34 as No. 17 Georgia Tech ended a three-game losing streak Thursday night with a 102-75 victory over No. 25 North Carolina in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Atlanta.
It was the worst loss for the Tar Heels since a 92-65 loss to Purdue in the NCAA tournament in 1969.
Georgia Tech (13-4, 3-4) never let up. The Yellow Jackets shot 53% compared to 32% for the Tar Heels. They outrebounded North Carolina, 52-34, and even forced Coach Dean Smith to forgo his usual clock stoppages in the final minutes.
“I can’t ever remember us being out of a game with two minutes to play,” Smith said.
Rich Fox led North Carolina with 18 points. The Tar Heels are 15-7, 5-2.
No. 10 Louisville 96, Virginia Tech 69--Jerome Harmon scored 16 points and the Cardinals never trailed in a Metro Conference game at Louisville, Ky.
Virginia Tech’s leading scorer Bimbo Coles played with the flu and scored only two points.
Louisville is 16-3, 6-1; Virginia Tech is 9-12, 1-5.
No. 19 Minnesota 79, Michigan State 74--Walter Bond’s 15 points and Kevin Lynch’s block of a three-point shot attempt by the Spartans’ Kirk Manns with 18 seconds to go led the Gophers in a Big Ten game at East Lansing, Mich.
Melvin Newbern scored 14 points for Minnesota (15-4, 6-3). Michigan State is 16-5, 5-3.
No. 22 Indiana 85, Wisconsin 61--The Hoosiers broke a two-game losing streak with their 20th consecutive victory over the Badgers in a Big Ten game at Bloomington, Ind.
Lyndon Jones scored a career-high 21 points for Indiana (14-4, 4-4).
Danny Jones led Wisconsin (11-10, 2-7) with 23 points.
Ohio State 101, Northwestern 77--The Buckeyes ended a four-game losing streak by handing the Wildcats their 32nd consecutive Big Ten road loss as freshman Jim Jackson scored 26 points at Columbus, Ohio.
Ohio State is 9-9, 4-5. Northwestern is 8-10, 1-7.
BYU 75, San Diego State 58--Steve Schreiner scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Cougars (17-3, 8-1) to their eighth consecutive victory in a Western Athletic Conference game at Provo, Utah.
Marty Dow led San Diego State (12-10, 4-5) with 15 points.
