NEWPORT BEACH : Officials to Review Parking-Meter Issue
City officials met this week to review a decision they made to extend to 10 p.m. the hours people must feed parking meters.
The move was taken to generate more revenue for such services as law enforcement and litter control.
It led to an outcry by merchants, patrons and residents who use the meters on Balboa Peninsula, Corona del Mar and other coastal areas of the city, said Rich Edmonston, city traffic engineer.
Before Jan. 1, parking meters only had to be fed until 5 p.m.
“Some of these meters are only for an hour at a time,” Edmonston said. “We’ve had complaints from restaurants about that. Also, lighting is bad in places, making instructions hard to read.”
Edmonston said city officials may consider holding a public hearing on the matter.
Throughout the city, parking meter revenues totaled just over $1 million last year.
The city has no projections on how much more money it expects to get by extending the meter hours, Edmonston said.
