Two police officers said they were shot at Thursday as they responded to a Southeast San Diego burglary, but a SWAT unit found no one at the scene, police spokesman Dave Cohen said Friday.

Officers Scott Naylor and Heather Petty said they heard shots but did not see a muzzle flash, Cohen said, adding that Petty said she “felt something go past her head.” However, authorities said no bullets or casings were found.

At 6:05 p.m., the officers went to 233 South 54th St. to investigate a report that the residence was “being trashed,” Cohen said. They found a back door open and went inside.

While walking down the hallway, the officers said shots were fired at them, Cohen said. They dived into a bedroom and called for backup. At 6:40 p.m., they broke a window, and Petty cut her hand while climbing out.

A SWAT unit did not get a response when it used a bullhorn to lure the assailants out, Cohen said. Tear gas was fired inside, and officers entered the house, which was vacant.

“There is no reason to believe that it was not a valid burglary,” Cohen said. “The place looked like it had been trashed by someone. Whoever fired the shots probably left the building.”

The five men who live in the house are on vacation in Mexico, he said.
