A United Airlines jet made a safe stop Thursday after two tires blew out just before takeoff from Lindbergh Field.

There were 57 passengers and seven crew members aboard the Boeing 727 bound for Denver at 7 p.m., said Sara Dornacker, United Airlines spokeswoman. No one was injured.

It took 40 minutes to clean up rubber debris on the runway.

Dornacker said that two right tires blew out as the aircraft approached the runway. The pilot aborted the takeoff and guided the jet to a stop near the east terminal.

Passengers debarked on mobile stairs. They stayed overnight in local hotels and were rebooked Friday on other United flights.

“We were unable to find a suitable plane (Thursday) night that met the regulations for night noise,” Dornacker said.

The aircraft was slightly damaged and is undergoing repairs.
