Navarro’s Six No-Hit Innings Lift Aztecs

Rick Navarro had a no-hitter through six innings before being relieved as San Diego State routed The Master’s College, 11-4, in the Aztecs’ season baseball opener at Smith Field.

Navarro, a graduate of Helix High, struck out eight and allowed just one base-runner, the second of the game, on an error. He was promptly thrown out trying to steal, and Navarro retired the next 16 batters he faced before he was relieved by Andy Peterson.

SDSU’s Steve Boucher was two for three with two runs batted in coming on a second inning home run.

U.S. International lost a nonconference game to Long Beach State, 15-4, in Long Beach. The Gulls fell to 0-2.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Camille Armijo and Alicia Harasty each scored 15 points in Point Loma Nazarene’s 75-49 victory over host The Master’s College in a nonconference game. Armijo also had five assists and three three-pointers. Shannon Abrams had five rebounds for Point Loma Nazarene (10-10). Point Loma led at halftime, 39-22. The Master’s dropped to 3-21.

Cari Young had 18 points to lead UC San Diego over UC Santa Cruz, 55-45, in a nonconference game in Santa Cruz.

University of San Diego Coach Kathy Marpe was named as an administrative assistant for the East team in the 1990 U.S. Olympic Festival to be held July 7-10 in Minneapolis. The team will be coached by Elaine Elliott of Utah.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Western Baptist broke Christian Heritage’s school-record nine-game winning streak, 76-70, in a nonconference game in Salem, Ore. Christian Heritage, ranked No. 1 in the National Christian College Athletic Assn., fell to 18-5. Western Baptist is ranked 18th.

SIGNINGS

Sale Isaia, Oceanside High’s All-County defensive tackle, has verbally committed to UCLA.

Asaia, 6-feet-5, 265 pounds, picked UCLA over USC, even though close friend Junior Seau, a former Oceanside standout, played with the Trojans.

“When I was up there, Junior was my host,” Asaia said. “He told me to go where I was going to be happy. He didn’t put any pressure on me.

“I really didn’t know anyone that had ever gone (to UCLA), but I just felt real good there. And my parents wanted me to go there.”

Asaia also visited Colorado, Arizona and Brigham Young.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

La Jolla’s Vicki Eveleth was named the state coach of the year by the California Coaches Assn. Eveleth will be honored at the group’s banquet March 16 in Walnut Creek.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State lost at No. 1 and No. 2 singles but went on to defeat Fresno State, 7-2, at SDSU. Dorey Brandt and Michele Apra lost their matches in straight sets, but Eva Olivarez, Susan Hawke, Nicole Storto and Paige Hammond won for the Aztecs, who improved to 2-0.

Second-ranked UCLA defeated USD, 7-2, in Los Angeles. Tonya Fuller defeated Iwalani McCalls, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 2 singles, and Laura Mannistro defeated Stella Sampras, 4-6, 6-0, 7-6, at No. 6 singles for USD.

Aby Brayton lost to Jessica Emmons, 6-0, 6-7, 6-4, at No. 1 singles.

Point Loma Nazarene won every match to defeat host Christ College Irvine, 9-0, in a Golden State Athletic Conference match. Kim Wright defeated Kim Tapley, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 1 singles for Point Loma Nazarene (1-0). At No. 2 singles, teammate Dede Walker defeated Kelly Kelso, 6-3, 7-5. Christ College dropped to 1-2.

MEN’S TENNIS

Point Loma Nazarene lost just one set as it routed Southern California College, 9-0, in a Golden State Athletic Conference match. Gary Rees and Hans Hoegstedt won at No. 1 and 2 singles then teamed at No. 1 doubles for PLNC (2-1, 1-0).

Other singles winners for PLNC were John Norton, Robert Pearson, Scott Dickey and Marc Gomez.

BASEBALL

The University of San Diego will play three alumni games today beginning at 10 a.m. Two five inning contests will be followed by a seven-inning game (approximately at 1:30 p.m.) featuring recent alumni versus the 1990 varsity.
