Sacramento King owner Gregg Lukenbill has admitted he helped raise money to defeat a new baseball stadium in San Francisco for the Giants, according to a published report.

Lukenbill, who wants to bring pro football and baseball to Sacramento, told the Sacramento Bee he asked a Woodland-based steel manufacturer to donate money to the campaign against the ballpark.

The subsequent $12,500 contribution was used for last-minute mailers in November that San Francisco Mayor Art Agnos called a “sleazy, underhanded effort” by Lukenbill to steal the baseball team and “loot” San Francisco in the aftermath of the earthquake.

Lukenbill’s campaign contribution is under investigation by the state Fair Political Practices Commission and the San Francisco district attorney’s office.
