The City Council Monday night passed an ordinance restricting the use of leaf blowers to the daytime hours.

The hours of use allowed under the new law, which takes effect in 30 days, will be between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and between noon and 5 p.m. on weekends, officials said.

A number of cities throughout Southern California, including Del Mar, have enacted outright bans on the machines in recent years.

The Solana Beach City Council had considered such a ban on the blowers, which critics say stir up dust, pollen and noise along with the leaves, but decided to take less stringent action after a public hearing was held.
