5th-Seeded Mayotte Breezes, Moves Into Milan Quarterfinals

Fifth-seeded Tim Mayotte became the first player to move into the quarterfinals of the Milan indoor tennis tournament today, while third-seeded Aaron Krickstein won his first-round match in straight sets.

Mayotte breezed past French qualifier Thierry Champion 6-2, 6-1.

Mayotte, ranked 14th in the world, has lost only five games in his two matches.

Krickstein, seventh in the world rankings, recovered from a 2-4 first-set deficit to down Italy’s Omar Camporese 6-4, 6-3.

Paolo Cane, who led Italy to a surprise victory against Sweden in the Davis Cup first round Monday, defeated Bruno Oresar of Yugoslavia 7-6, 6-4.

Cane, No. 35 in the world, said he is looking forward to playing second-seeded John McEnroe in the second round. McEnroe faces Andrei Cherkasov of the Soviet Union tonight.

“I would like to produce another wonder against McEnroe,” Cane said.
