School District Bans Gang-Related Attire

Share

After months of wrangling, the governing board of the Antelope Valley Union High School District on Wednesday night adopted a sweeping ban on gang-related attire by students at the district’s six campuses.

The ban takes effect immediately in the district, which covers the entire Antelope Valley and has nearly 10,000 students. Aimed at curbing a growing gang problem in the region, it provides for warning of students for first offenses, and suspension or expulsion for subsequent infractions.

It does not single out specific types of clothing, accessories or other items the district will consider gang-related. District officials said it will be up to school principals to decide that, based on advice from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
