Share

The 1990 Census will create more than 45,000 jobs statewide over the spring and early summer.

The Census Bureau has begun a major recruiting campaign to attract applicants for a variety of temporary census jobs, including about 35,000 census takers, throughout the state.

Of the jobs available, 35,000 of them will be for the position of field enumerator, or census taker.

From April through June, these workers will visit households that did not mail back their census forms by April 1. Efforts will be made to hire applicants who live within five miles of the area they will be working. There will also be more than 10,000 people hired as clerical and field supervisors, data entry clerks, and recruiters.

Most jobs will last from three to eight weeks, many requiring up to 40 hours a week. Wages will range from $6 to $7.50 per hour for enumerators, $5.50 to $7.50 per hour for clerical staff and $7.50 to $8.50 per hour for crew leaders.

To qualify for the jobs, the applicant must be 18 years of age or older and have a satisfactory work record. Men 18 to 25 must show proof of Selected Service registration. Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply. Applicants will be asked to take a 30-minute written test to measure clerical, numerical, organization and reading skills. Field enumerators are required to have their own transportation.
